A celebration and coming together of “America’s music” and our “National pastime” is the mission of The Bluegrass Baseball Project (BBP), part of the bigger picture of keeping the music we love not only alive, but vibrant and strong, growing and reaching into the future. Our primary goal is to have the month of September celebrated as "Bluegrass Month" in professional baseball and "Baseball Month" celebrated in the bluegrass community. It is the month in which the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, was born and died, and any story of his life cannot be told without including his love of baseball. The creation of the BBP was inspired by Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys and their Bluegrass Allstars Baseball club, a team born of, and inspired by, Bill Monroe's fierce devotion to baseball.
The BBP was created to research and share the historical connections between Bill Monroe and baseball with one and all, and to reach out to professional baseball and the bluegrass community across America suggesting there be a "Bill Monroe Day" on September 13th, Big Mon's birthday, or "Bluegrass Days" (or Nights) at ballparks during the month of September each year. The BBP also seeks to encourage the building of bridges between bluegrass events and baseball. There are over forty annual bluegrass festivals held across the Country every September. And there are nearly thirteen-hundred professional baseball games played during the month of September. Festivals held near games could encourage attendance at both events; teams could have their “Bill Monroe Day” or "Bluegrass Day" in conjunction with a local festival; truly, a celebration of America’s music and our National pastime!
One team at a time... One season at a time... Whatever it takes... What a great time of year it would be for bluegrass and for baseball if "Bluegrass Month" was to become a reality! And for the bluegrass community, what a great way to celebrate Big Mon’s love of baseball… “Baseball Month!”
The Bluegrass Baseball Project is a grass roots campaign solely motivated by a shared love of bluegrass, America's music, and our National pastime, baseball, and the desire to celebrate the two across the country at one special time of the year, the beautiful month of September, for years to come! The Bluegrass Baseball Project does not seek, nor will it accept, any monetary compensation or donations. This is not about money. It is about coming together! Brothers and Sisters, let's celebrate!
